"Adults get all the fun"

We recently got a Disney Cruise DVD in the mail. We all sat down and watched it. Not the whole thing because there are no teens in our little family. And the DVD had too many sub-menus. A few hours later, while tucking the kid in to bed she exclaimed, "It sounds like adults get all the fun!"

I didn't know what she was talking about. She elaborated - "On the cruise. You get to relax and eat dinner but the kids don't."

Pretty genius attempt to prolong her awake time. She's smart. She saw the video. She knows what the kids can do. What the families can do together. What is only for the adults.

Maybe we should call her bluff?

Nah. Us adults will have too much fun on the cruise to risk cancelling it. :D

Top 10

I was reading posts on Rants from Mommyland when I stumbled across the Top 10 Rules according to the blogger's kids. This made be question the kid about our house rules.

1. No jumping on the bed
2. No jumping on the furniture
3. Don't bother the cats while they are eating
4. Don't let Trinity out of the backyard
5. No sneaking downstairs and having candy
6. No throwing snowballs at the cats
7. Don't go outside when it is dark out
8. No wearing short sleeved dresses in the winter.
9. No dumping water bottles on the cats head
10.  Don't go near the tv (or the video games) while doing something silly.

I don't know where she comes up with this stuff. She doesn't torture our cats (Trinity or Sera). In fact, this is the first I've heard that she might have an inkling to throw a snowball or dunk a bottle of water on them.

Another one bites the dust

Last week my sister and I were walking around Target with the kid. We were checking out all the Easter goodies when the kid started talking about what the Easter Bunny would bring her.

I actually saw her realize who was behind the magic. She already knew about the Tooth Fairy and Santa but the Easter Bunny hadn't hit her radar until that moment.

She said to me, "hey, wait a minute. I have to ask you about something when we're in the car and have shut the doors so no little kids can hear us."

I told her that I was very proud of her for thinking of others and confirmed her discovery. Nothing quite like watching the light bulb moment. I'm just glad she wasn't upset.

Everything tastes better with Bacon

I have discovered the best bacon in the world - Cherry Pink Bacon. You can buy it at Longo's. It is a little more expensive than the normal stuff but it is so delicious. It melts in your mouth.

Obviously I am not a vegetarian.

And one day I will try chocolate covered bacon. I did try Mo's Milk Chocolate Bacon Bar. Sadly, it didn't live up to the hype.

I'm back

I basically stayed off the computer for a whole week! Well, I spent maybe a total of an hour online over the whole week and a bit. Felt good. But I also felt less connected.

It's hard to be back in the frigid cold after the warm Texas weather. No need for a coat or long sleeves there. And it was nice to miss the big snowstorm. But it is back to real life now.

What is wrong with me?

I'm going to leave for Texas right after work tomorrow. It is 8:45 and I still haven't started packing. Although I guess I have thought about it since I am writing this post. And thinking about it is half the battle.

When Hubby and I went on our honeymoon I packed a week before we left.

Seriously?

The kid is at hubby's parents' house right now. Tomorrow she goes to my folks. We talked to her tonight and she was really, really upset. Why? Because my mom had forgotten to call her. Mom called her this morning but kid was out. And my mom forgot to call back.

Luckily, I was able to call Mom and tell her to call the kid - pronto! That could have been a very, very bad thing.

March Break

The kid is on March break this week. She's actually going to get an extra long vacation. She'll spend most of the week in St. Catharines with her grandparents (both sets). After work on Thursday, my sister and I are going to drive up there and my Mom will drive us - and the kid - over the border. Early on Friday morning we're off to Dallas to visit my Grandma!

The kid loves our trips to Texas. I'm extra excited because the weather is actually going to be pleasant. Last March break we were there. We left our coats in Buffalo with my mom and then it SNOWED in Texas! It was quite distressing - especially since it was actually warmer in Canada at that time.

I'm happy to say that the 10-day forecast is predicting highs in the low 80s and lows in the 60s or mid-50s. I don't think we'll be seeing Texan snow this trip!

Match Damn It

The kid has quite an assortment of adorable pajamas. I'm really partial to the Nick and Nora brand that I can get at Target. Especially since I can get cute jammies that match the kid's. Yeah, I'm a totally loser. But whatever. They're flannel and they're cute.

And the kid never matches the bottom to the top. It drives me batty!

You sunk my Yahtzee

Last month we went cross-border shopping. In Target, I stumbled across the Super Mario Yahtzee game on clearance. Of course we bought it. We love Mario and the kid thinks he is the best plumber ever too! It is awesome! I especially love the coin box.

Needless to say there has been some family gaming going on at our house. The best part is that Yahtzee helps teach the kid math! And since she certainly isn't learning addition or subtraction (let alone multiplication) in her public school this can only be a good thing. Although her teacher assures me that they're going to start covering basic math soon. But, let's face it. Of course that wasn't going to cut it for us. After all, if the kid is reading at a 4th or 5th grade level we can't have her only able to do grade 1 math. Right? Actually she loves it and keeps asking for worksheets so I guess we aren't traumatizing her too much. And she gets to play Yahtzee so...

Cat or Dog

One of our cats has taken to begging. When you are in the kitchen she will come up next to you and meow quite loudly. And what she wants is a share of what you are eating. She doesn't necessarily end up eating it but she wants her share. She loves mayo and rotisserie chicken. She is also quite fond of cheese.

It is just quite disconcerting to have a cat making puppy dog eyes and actively begging while you're trying to make dinner - or even packing the kid's school lunch.

Weird beast.

Practice makes perfect

The kid is very, very excited about our upcoming trip to the Caribbean. She has already started practicing her "diving." She likes to go underwater. In August, right before our trip to Bermuda she practiced with her mask and snorkel. Of course, she didn't use them on the actual trip. I now have to dig through the vacation gear and relocate her snorkel and mask. Apparently closing her eyes and dunking underwater in the bathtub is "not good enough." Eventually I'll look for the stuff.

Cracking the code

Hubby got a really cool game from his sister for his birthday - the Lego game Pirate Code. For some reason it took forever for us to get around to opening it. But now, we seem to play it all the time. The kid wants to crack our pirate code all the time. Essentially, it is a reboot of the old Mastermind game. Only a little easier. And with Lego. Pretty cool. And it doesn't take too long to finish a game!

She's not overtired

Last night the kid and hubby played Super Mario head-to-head for almost an hour. They were having a lot of fun. That was obvious from the laughter and threats of death the kid made to her father.

Imagine my shock when I shut the game down so she could go to bed.

"But I didn't even want to play, Mommy!"

"I only played to make him happy."

"I couldn't say no 'I'm not playing with you' because he is the parent"

Since I wasn't born yesterday, I sent her to bed anyway. And made a new rule - the DS can only be played on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. To which I got a "thank you, Mommy!"

Yes, my husband forces our child to play video games. And if you believe that - want to buy some swampland in Florida?

Discover Cove

So I have booked our flights and our cruise. I still have to book three nights before and the night after the cruise at a hotel. Currently I am leaning towards Hard Rock Hotel or Royal Pacific. Why? Because if you stay at a Universal hotel you don't have to wait in line.

We arrive at 9:30 am on the Wednesday so we have three full days. We could spend all three days at Universal or we could spend two days at Universal and one day at Discovery Cove. Is it worth that much to swim with the dolphins? Although if Hubby doesn't swim with the dolphins it'll be considerably less. But we did let the kid hang with the dolphins in Bermuda in August. Perhaps this falls into the spoiling category? Except she would actually get to swim with the dolphins this time.

So many things to decide. At least we still have several weeks to ponder this. It's going to be weird skipping Disney World but I think we can do it!

And here are a few links for my husband - trip reports from others that have done the Eastern cruise. And one who went to Discovery Cove.

I'm practically a Cowboy

Well, not really, but sometimes it feels that way. Especially since the kid and I are off to Texas in a couple of weeks to visit my Grandma. And then in April, I get to go to Calgary.

What?

Why?

How?

National conference for United Way. There's some pretty interesting stuff happening and I'm excited to be a part of it. Of course, that means that certain people may get to "babysit" the kid over the telephone during the trip. You know, when Hubby has had too much kid time and lets her talk to Grandma for hours and hours. Hey, whatever works.

Girl drama!

The kid has had a lot of boyfriends in her six years. We've kind of lost track of them all. The latest boyfriend is an older boy - a 6th grader! In fact, he used to be her lunch monitor.

I'm not worried because as far as I can tell this is how their relationship began.

A gaggle of first grade girls surround a grade 6 boy and ask
"Is the kid your girlfriend?"

The sixth grader laughs and sarcastically says "yes".

And there you have it! The kid is quite embarrassed about her new boyfriend. I give it to the end of the weekend before she decides to fall in love with another boy. I just feel bad for the old boyfriend who got dumped for the 6th grade boy. He's moving to New Zealand next week. You'd of thought she's put off breaking up until he'd left. Isn't that why they invented email?

Disney, baby!

Last week we finally made a decision regarding our family vacation plans.

This Spring we are going on our first cruise. And, naturally we chose Disney - specifically the 7-day eastern Caribbean trip.

The kid is super excited! She read the brochure and couldn't stop gushing about it. Apparently we aren't going to see much of her on the trip because "there is a kids club, Mommy! And I'm going to spend so much time there!"

Now we just have to decide how many days to tack on before the holiday (we can leave Wednesday at the earliest and our ship departs on Saturday)and what exactly to do. After all, there are so many choices in Orlando - Universal Studios, Discovery Cove, Sea World, Aquatica, Kennedy Space Centre, Gatorland, and, of course, Disney World.

Evil tests

Last week I had an MRI for my Crohn's disease. I wasn't worried about it. I figured since it was less invasive than my colonoscopy it would be smooth sailing.

And it sort of was. And it wasn't.

My appointment started two hours later than scheduled. And I got to drink bowel prep right before my MRI. Yes, the same stuff that makes you GO. Only I got to drink a bit less than I had to for my colonoscopy. And they gave me something to delay its effects. And boy did it work. I was fine during the MRI - which incidentally is just loud - I got to watch part of a movie while it was running. I was fine getting home. But for the next 5 days the prep would suddenly start working. Complete with the stomach cramps. Super.

But at least there wasn't a tube up my butt.
